“So we’re the Addams Family now.”
Violet Harmon (Taissa Farmiga) moves into a new house at the beginning of season 1 of American Horror Story with her mom Vivian (Connie Britton) and dad Ben (Dylan McDermott), and right away, Violet makes a hilarious statement. While every season of American Horror Story appeals to horror fans, season 1 is memorable thanks to the characters, as they each hide some dark secrets and creepy desires.
Violet’s quote is interesting since it not only speaks to how eerie other people think her family is, but also to Ben and Vivian’s strange and passionate romance. Gomez and Morticia Adams might freak other people out, but fans know how much they love each other.
“It’s like Stephen King says, murder is like potato chips, you can’t just stop at one.”
Jake Fitzgerald (Tom Maden) and Brooke Maddox (Carlson Young) have a dramatic relationship in season 1 of the TV adaptation of Scream, which is better than people think. Jake also says a funny quote and references the Stephen King book Under The Dome.
Since the best quotes from the Scream franchise are often meta and speak to the love that fans have for the horror genre, Jake’s words are even better and more memorable. The characters are just as smart as those in the films as they have a real appreciation for scary stories and are shocked that they have found themselves in the middle of one.
“I wanted to give you the best summer… I’m so sorry.”
Dead of Summer is an underrated teen horror TV show where Deb Carpenter (Elizabeth Mitchell) runs a summer camp and copes with the memory of losing her one true love. Deb apologizes for the horrors of the summer season as the campers and counselors are targeted by an evil and dangerous supernatural figure.
The series has an epic twist at the end that shifts perception of the episodes that came before it, but Deb’s words are just as meaningful. Deb truly wanted to deliver a summer to remember and she can’t believe how quickly things have gone wrong.
“I have never lied to you. Now, people in this town, they lie all the time. Everybody has a secret. Secrets they take to the grave. Secrets they’re willing to kill to protect.”
When Sarah Bennett (Katie McGrath) moves back to her hometown and opens up an art gallery there, she’s terrified to learn that a serial killer is on the loose. In a scary and stunning scene, Sarah talks to Tom Winston (Patrick Garrow), a man who used to be a priest and who brutally murdered her parents when her mom was pregnant.
Slasher is a perfect TV show for horror fans and the first season stands out for having all the hallmarks of this genre, from characters with secrets to a small town setting to the overall mystery of a killer. Sarah is surprised that Tom is so honest with her, and he has a point that the residents of this particular place covering up some truly dark things.
“Mom says that a house is like a body. And every house has eyes and bones and skin. A face. This room is like the heart of the house. No, not a heart, a stomach.”
The Netflix series The Haunting of Hill House is great to watch around Halloween and proof of Mike Flanagan’s talent for telling emotionally driven tales that are incredibly creepy. Eleanor “Nell” Crain (Victoria Pedretti) says a beautiful yet eerie and haunting quote when she explains that their mom Olivia (Carla Gugino) always talked about their childhood home being just like a human body.
Olivia’s words are significant as the Crain siblings all grew up absolutely terrified of the gorgeous yet terrible mansion where they spent their early years. They saw more death and pain than anyone should ever experience and have such awful memories as a result. Nell’s Bent-Neck Lady character is scary and Nell also says some of the wisest things from the miniseries as she knows that no one can really get past this kind of trauma.
