The current Universal Champion has held the gold for 365 consecutive days and shows no signs of dropping it anytime soon. Reigns has defeated the likes of John Cena, Edge, Daniel Bryan, Kevin Owens and more throughout his historic title reign.
The next pay-per-view event on the WWE calendar is Extreme Rules in September. Reigns is scheduled to defend his Universal Championship against Finn Balor this week on SmackDown. However, it can be expected that The Tribal Chief will also defend his title at the pay-per-view too.
Roman Reigns has a lengthy history at the Extreme Rules event and has produced some of the best matches of his career at the show.
With this in mind, let’s take a closer look at the five best Roman Reigns WWE Extreme Rules pay-per-view matches.
#5. The Shield vs. Team Hell No - Tornado Tag Team match (WWE Extreme Rules 2013)
Roman Reigns’ first match at an Extreme Rules event came in 2013 as a member of The Shield faction.
Heading into the event, Roman Reigns, Seth Rollins and Dean Ambrose all declared that they would leave with WWE gold around their waists.
Dean Ambrose successfully defeated Kofi Kingston to win the United States Championship earlier on in the evening. This paved the way for Reigns and Rollins to challenge for the WWE Tag Team Championships.
Roman Reigns and Seth Rollins completed The Shield’s quest for gold. They successfully defeated Team Hell No to capture the WWE Tag Team Championships for the first time in their careers.
The finish of the match saw Reigns and Rollins hit a torture rack into a diving knee strike double team finisher on Daniel Bryan. With this, they picked up the victory and captured the WWE Tag Team Championships.
#4. Bray Wyatt vs. Finn Balor vs. Roman Reigns vs. Samoa Joe vs. Seth Rollins - Extreme Rules match (WWE Extreme Rules 2017)
WWE Monday Night RAW was under the tyranical reign of Brock Lesnar as Universal Champion in 2017.
The Beast Incarnate refused to defend his Universal Championship at Extreme Rules. It was then announced that a Fatal 5-Way would take place to determine the number one contender for Lesnar’s title.
The winner of the match would challenge The Beast at the upcoming Great Balls of Fire pay-per-view.
Top Monday Night RAW Superstars Bray Wyatt, Finn Balor, Roman Reigns, Samoa Joe and Seth Rollins all faced off to earn a shot at destiny.
A tremendous, near 30 minute performance from all five WWE Superstars ended with Samoa Joe locking in the Coquina Clutch on Finn Balor. It caused Balor to pass out, giving Joe a shock victory and a Universal Championship opportunity.
#3. The Shield vs. Evolution - Six-man tag team match (WWE Extreme Rules 2014)
Coming out of WrestleMania XXX in 2014, The Shield turned babyface for the first time in their WWE careers. They began feuding with Triple H, Randy Orton and Batista.
This caused Triple H, Orton and Batista to put their issues aside and re-form their legendary Evolution faction on Monday Night RAW. The rivalry led to a six-man tag team match at the Extreme Rules pay-per-view, pitting The Shield against Evolution for the first time ever.
The match was frenetic and fast paced. An amazing moment saw Seth Rollins dive off a balcony onto Triple H and Randy Orton as they attacked Dean Ambrose in the crowd.
The closing moments saw Roman Reigns hit a spear on Batista, pinning The Animal to gain the victory for The Shield in a tremendous match.
#2. Roman Reigns vs. AJ Styles - World Heavyweight Title Extreme Rules match (WWE Extreme Rules 2016)
The WWE World Heavyweight Championship was on the line in the main event of Extreme Rules in 2016.
After Roman Reigns successfully defended his championship against AJ Styles at Payback, a rematch was announced for Extreme Rules.
The match was absolutely terrific. Spots including AJ Styles hitting Reigns with a Phenomenal Forearm off the Kick-Off Show table and Styles being back body dropped through an announcers’ table at ringside.
The closing moments saw Roman Reigns kick out of two Styles Clashes, with the second coming on a steel chair. Styles then attempted another Phenomenal Forearm, only to be speared in mid-air. Reigns then got the pin and retained the WWE World Heavyweight Championship.
The match is also remembered for Seth Rollins’ shocking return from injury afterwards. He hit Reigns with a Pedigree to close the show.
#1. Roman Reigns & The Undertaker vs. Shane McMahon & Drew McIntyre - No Holds Barred Tag Team Match (WWE Extreme Rules 2019)
Roman Reigns and The Undertaker were foes in the main event of WrestleMania 33. However, at Extreme Rules 2019, the WWE legends teamed up to take on Shane McMahon and Drew McIntyre.
The No Holds Barred tag team match saw early interference from Elias, who attacked The Undertaker. After McIntyre hit a Claymore Kick, Shane McMahon hit a diving elbow drop from the top rope onto The Deadman through the announcers’ table.
With the match seemingly nearing an end, McMahon hit his signature coast-to-coast trashcan dropkick onto The Undertaker. However, as Shane McMahon went for the pin, The Undertaker performed his trademark sit-up.
The Undertaker then hit Chokeslams on Shane McMahon and Elias. Roman Reigns then hit a spear on Drew McIntyre. This allowed The Undertaker to hit a Tombstone Piledriver onto Shane McMahon for the victory.
