After all, one of the biggest superstars of the last 10 years, CM Punk left the company after Vince wouldn’t put him in the main event of WrestleMania.
While some main events aren’t very special and some are darn right bad, we have been blessed many times over the last 34 years with great Mania main events.
Whether it’s the compelling story or the amazing in-ring work, these were the 5 best WrestleMania main events ever. Unfortunately, Roman vs Brock from WM34 didn’t quite make the cut.
#5 The Rock vs Stone Cold Steve Austin (WrestleMania X-Seven)
Yeah, yeah we already know this is the best mania of all time. But a PPV can’t be the best ever without an amazing main event.
Whether or not you liked the heel turn, the match itself before the finish was incredibly special. There was a brawl off the bell and lots more brawling as it was made a no disqualification match. Austin and Rock were never the best in-ring performers ever, but this match proved that no one should have any doubt that they can go.
Austin ended the match by turning heel in his home state of Texas and won the title to the delight of the crowd. Another great thing about this match was that it ended in a simple chair shot. Well actually, many chair shots.
The simplicity of the biggest show ever not ending with a move but rather a weapon shot may seem strange, but it was a great end to this awesome show.
#4 Brock Lesnar vs Roman Reigns vs Seth Rollins (WrestleMania 31)
The build to this match can only be described in a PG way as poor. The match, however, oh god did it deliver. Matches like this are why Brock Lesnar is one of my favorites of all time.
Roman and Brock beat the living hell out of each other, Brock hit F5 after F5, he bled like he’d just been hit by a bus. Roman got a near fall that made the crowd run wild only for Brock to hit one more F5.
The match was then flipped on its head when Seth Rollins ran to the ring and announced he was cashing in his MITB briefcase. Seth hit Roman with a curb stomp and won the WWE Title after a great match and one of the best finishes in WWE history.
#3 Batista vs Randy Orton vs Daniel Bryan (WrestleMania XXX)
Imagine if it was just Orton vs Batista. Just imagine that for a second.
The story of Daniel Bryan’s rise to the main event of WrestleMania was a great one and his winning moment was one of the best in Mania history. But the match certainly didn’t disappoint.
There was a point in the match where Orton hit an RKO on Batista that had me fearing that Bryan wouldn’t win and that is not worth thinking about. Luckily The Animal kicked out and Bryan went on to hit Orton with the running knee and put Batista in the Yes Lock.
Batista tapped out and Bryan won and celebrated with his sister, his niece and as if things couldn’t get any more heart warming, he celebrated with Connor The Crusher. An iconic Mania moment and a main event that more than delivered.
#2 Shawn Michaels vs The Undertaker (Wrestlemania XXVI)
While not as good as their WrestleMania 25 match a year prior, this match was incredibly great.
While their other match was better in the ring, it could be argued that this match’s story was better. The fact that at the end of this night, either Shawn Michaels’ career or The Undertaker’s streak would be over, struck fans with every single emotion.
And at the end of the night, it was Shawn’s career that came to an end (Saudi Arabia doesn’t count) and the pair embraced after a hard fought battle from both men.
If we look past the story, the match itself in the ring was still amazing. The ending sequence was Taker reluctant to put Shawn away, Shawn then hitting him which angered Taker which lead to him hitting a jumping Tombstone Piledriver. What an ending. What a match. What a story.
#1 Chris Benoit vs Triple H vs Shawn Michaels (Wrestlemania XX)
The story was parallel to Daniel Bryan’s story at Mania 30. Chris Benoit was facing two of the best WWE Superstars of all time and it was time to see if this huge underdog could finally win the big one, and he did.
It will not surprise any of you that have seen these three men wrestle before, that this match was quite awesome. Shawn is probably the best in-ring performer in WWE history, Benoit was also incredible and while people moan at Triple H a lot, on his day he was an amazing pro wrestler.
The match ended when Benoit made Triple H tap out using the crossface and celebrated after with his best friend Eddie Guerrero. What happened after this is really, really sad, but this moment will forever live in WrestleMania history.
